Book Review: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

January 10, 20232 min read

“Maybe we cannot escape from the destiny of the human, but we have a choice: to suffer our destiny or to enjoy our destiny.”
- Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz offers a simple but powerful code of conduct for attaining personal freedom and true happiness.

Don Miguel suggests that most of our suffering is self-inflicted, and that by changing the way we think and act, we can improve our lives significantly.

The four agreements are:

  1. Be impeccable with your word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using your words to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

  2. Don’t take anything personally: Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

  3. Don’t make assumptions: Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

  4. Always do your best: Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

Personally, while I found this book to be impactful (and quite good as far as rules for self-governance), simply reading the above communicates what the book does, but with far less words.

That being said, this book was a simple and enjoyable read.

It encourages the you to be mindful of your thoughts and actions, and to question beliefs and assumptions you may have held for a long time.

It's a powerful reminder to be kinder to yourself and to others and that changing your thoughts and beliefs can lead to true happiness and freedom.

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I can see why they were so passionate about it.
